Vedanta Khushi spreads its wings and this time in South India in Tamil Nadu. The education of more than 5150 girl students from 72 Government Primary Schools, spread across 70 villages in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi and Ottapidaram blocks are now being supported by Sterlite Industries in close association with Tamil Nadu Government and NGOs.
The sole objective of the project is to give quality education to poor and deprived children, only girls this time, in a sustainable environment.
The UNICEF data supports that school access, student enrolment and teacher attendance are now exemplary in Tamil Nadu but the question remains on quality of education. A study found that one third of students in Class 8 could only read at Class 2 levels, while only half could do subtraction and division. Also three quarters of the state’s population are literate and the rates are much lower for underprivileged children. Student dropout rates are quite alarming in the State.
This project by Sterlite Industries is aimed to fill-up the knowledge gaps in education of these girls. And thus Sterlite has started arranging special classed for 2 hours for these girls.
These classes are held after their regular school hours by the 160 trained tutors selected from within the community. This has also actively involved local talent and given them livelihood.
All the girl students have been provided school bags, stationery items, notebooks, shoes, and even an umbrella, as part of the academic support.
The KHUSHI on the faces of these children is to be seen to be believed. But most important is the satisfaction of being able to provide quality education to these 5150 girls.
